When I was younger, I would always read history books with a sense of omniscience. Well of course this is the outcome—obviously the US won its independence from England; of course Cleopatra was the last pharaoh of Egypt. It was like reading to the end of a novel; you get the sense that you know the whole story and everything there is to know about the characters. Nothing else can happen...
